Worth knowing about UV disinfection lamps and UV disinfection devices

What is UV-C light?

Ultraviolet light or UV radiation is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths so short that it is not visible to the human eye. It is divided into three areas with different wavelengths: UV-A light with a wavelength of 380-315 nm (nanometers), UV-B light with a wavelength of 315-280 nm and UV-C light with a wavelength of 280–100 nm. This means that UV-C light is the shortest-wave UV light. UV light occurs naturally and can be simulated using UV lamps. Artificial UV-C light can be used to sterilize and disinfect objects.

What is the advantage of disinfection lamps?

The great advantage of disinfection lamps is that they do not require any chemicals at all. No biocides are used that can harm both health and the environment. When used properly, UV disinfection devices are therefore the better choice.

What can be cleaned with a UV disinfection lamp?

In principle, objects with smooth surfaces can be cleaned with a UV disinfection lamp, such as things made of metal or glass. In addition to smartphones, you can, for example, disinfect your keys. It can also be used to disinfect glasses, scissors, watches, toothbrushes or cosmetic tools such as tweezers.

What cannot be cleaned with a UV disinfection lamp?

UV disinfection lamps are germicidal, but they cannot be used for all surfaces and objects. According to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, the disinfection of textiles and filter materials has not been investigated enough to say with certainty that germs, viruses and bacteria are successfully destroyed. Such materials are better cleaned by other means. Such devices are also unsuitable for skin and hand disinfection.

Warning: if you have a device that has lamps only on the top or only on the bottom, you will need to rotate the part to be disinfected to clean both sides.

Are UV disinfection lamps dangerous?

When used correctly, UV disinfection lamps pose no danger. However, the devices must not be aimed at the eyes or skin. There they can cause health problems. Therefore, they should not be accessible to children. Models with a lid are particularly safe.
